At the end of the farming season, Halima Isaka sat with her 10-month-old daughter at the edge of their family’s field, watching as her husband loaded a pile of dried millet stalks onto an oxcart. This year’s crop was so bad that it will not even last us three months,” she said. “For three years now there have been little rains in the area. Before that we had better rains,” states Halima, but now it’s been three years that we didn’t have enough food to feed our family.” Like much of the country, this arid region bordering the Sahara desert is prone to seasons of drought,” states Halima, but in recent years since there hasn’t been any rain the situation has worsened. Today, Six million people in Niger and millions more in Mali, Mauritania and Chad are affected. Communities in Burkina Faso, Senegal, northern Cameroon and Nigeria are also at risk. Many governments have declared a state of emergency. Watch the video above on youtube.

Günther Fink, Ph.D., an affiliated faculty member of the Center on the Developing Child and assistant professor of international health economics at Harvard School of Public Health, and Beatrice Matafwali, Ph.D., of the University of Zambia. They have provided Zambian Child Assessment Test (ZamCAT) which combines existing child development measures with newly developed items in order to provide a broad assessment of children of preschool age in the Zambian context.

I think this is a great service that have been put together by the faculty of Harvard University, UNICEF Organization, and the professor of the University of Zambia.

The Global Funds for Children believe the best way to reach vulnerable children is through grassroots organizations. These grassroots organization are in the communities. And these organizations are well placed to reach children where they live, play, and work, and to create opportunities for them to learn, grow, and thrive. But, what about Africa, some communities are miles and miles apart, and I don’t think that they are resourceful enough in their area.

When reading on this site, I discovered something that is very important and very interesting to know on Family Child Care Provider. Go to the website below and check your state’s requirement for Family Child Care provider. I did not know that the state of Mississippi did not require small childcare provider to be license unless they are caring for seven or more children. I live in the state of Mississippi.

  1. It breaks my heart to know that there are still so many children in different country struggling with food, water, health, and etc. The Global Fund and UNICEF are great organizations that work with other organizations to help countries that are in need. UNICEF provides cancer drives and raises money for the sole purpose of help striving families dealing with poverty. It really braks my heart that the Isaka family only had enough food for three months. I have talk with my boss so that we may get the parents involve with these organizations and help with donations.

  2. Gloria, it too breaks my heart to know that there are children and families all over the world who are going without adequate food or water. I am thankful for organizations such as UNICEF who are making a difference in these people's lives. I didn't realize that Harvard University was doing so much to enrich the lives of children not only in the United States but all over the world. I look forward to learning more about the Global Children's Initiative.

  3. Hi Gloria ,
Thank you for sharing this information. I too am sadden by the lack of simple, basics of life for these families. It really puts perspectives in place when some people are complaining all the time and not appreciative of what they have been given. We all have our likes and dislikes, but being appreciative means alot when one doesn't have much of anything to eat. I am sadden to read this , but again thank you for sharing
